i’m working on an app called Grubflip that allows restaurant workers to flip their employee meal for an employee meal from a person that works like at taco bell. doesn’t appear to obviously break any rules but i wanted to check, thanks!

It goes directly against the UK Hourly Paid Employee Handbook ‘When you’re working, you are allowed a free meal during your break. You’ll need to check how this works in your restaurant with your manager. This isn’t a friends and family offer: free food and drinks are just for you and you must have them in the restaurant. Free meals are for team members only and it’s not okay to give to anyone or take without permission.’
so, even though it might be applicable to all other McD employees worldwide…?
Grubflip doesn’t encourage anyone to violate workplace policy. It helps employees who are allowed to exchange their earned meal discover nearby people and coordinate the trade. one country’s outlier policy shouldn’t spoil that for all the McDonald’s workers worldwide.

Canadian mod here. It would be against Canadian policy as well, and I would have to assume it’d go against policy for most international McOpCo/franchised stores as well.

just out of curiosity and for my own knowledge, does it violate the US handbook? i’ve been getting a very positive response in general to the app and i’m really hoping mcdonalds employees can participate. regardless i really appreciate the insight!

Most stores are franchises with their own rules regarding employee meals so there is nothing we can provide that will coverage nationwide. At the base, what you are proposing is fraud by misrepresentation. The employee meal/discount is exclusively for employees of McDonald’s. So say a McDonald’s employee uses your app to trade their meal/discount with an say a Taco Bell employee, then the Taco Bell employee is committing fraud against McDonald’s by posing as an McDonald’s employee. Have you not run this by your legal team first?
